There were a couple of affiliations between not-for-profits made public this month, so far. First, Garden Spot Communities and Frederick Living, both located in southeastern Pennsylvania, announced that they will be affiliating. Legal proceedings have been initiated, with the affiliation expected to be finalized at the start of 2024, subject to government approval. Upon completion of the affiliation, Frederick Living will become a Garden Spot community.
Garden Spot was founded in 1990 and includes Garden Spot Village, a CCRC with 626 independent living units, 65 assisted living units, 40 memory care units and 73 skilled nursing beds. Garden Spot also includes Maple Farm, a 46-bed skilled nursing facility. Frederick Living is a CCRC that was founded in 1896 and comprises 164 independent living units, 159 assisted living units, 31 memory care units and 32 skilled nursing beds. The organizations noted that the affiliation is a result of single-site and small organizations becoming more difficult to manage.
Next, Assumption Community, a senior living community in Cold Spring, Minnesota, is transferring ownership to Minnesota-based Benedictine. The effective date of the transfer is dependent on the review and approval by the Minnesota Department of Health, but it is anticipated on or after November 1, 2023.
Assumption Community was founded in 1963 by the Church of Saint Boniface. It includes Assumption Home, a 76-bed skilled nursing facility, Assumption Court, a 59-unit assisted living community, Asher Haus, a 28-unit assisted living/memory care building, the John Paul Apartments, a 61-unit subsidized senior apartment building, and Assumption Community Services, a Medicare-certified home health agency. The campus currently employs 153 people, and Benedictine is seeking to retain current employees.
