The Santa Stock Rally Is Stalling

We were supposed to see stocks rise this month, but so far the market is down as are seniors housing stocks. So what happened to the Santa rally? While we still have a few weeks to go before the end of the year, the markets have been sinking, and almost all seniors housing and care stocks have dropped, with Brookdale Senior Living falling the most, with a loss in value of 12% since November 30. It has now dropped below the psychologically important $20 threshold, and any bad news could add insult to injury. CareTrust bucks the trend

Since its formation in June 2014 when it was spun out from The Ensign Group as a publicly traded REIT, CareTrust REIT has largely taken part in small one- to three-property acquisitions with prices as small as $6.6 million but never larger than $18 million. The portfolio, owned and operated by Liberty Nursing Centers, includes 1,102 operating skilled nursing beds and 156 assisted living and independent living units throughout the state of Ohio. Stepping in to operate these facilities will be Indiana-based Pristine Senior Living, which... Read More »

Ensign crosses the Mississippi…East

An operator of skilled nursing facilities and assisted living communities primarily in western states, The Ensign Group made its first eastward crossing of the Mississippi in a big way, by acquiring the operations of 15 assisted living communities with 687 total units in Wisconsin. Bridgestone Living LLC, Ensign’s seniors housing subsidiary, assumed a long-term master lease on the properties, which includes an option to purchase all of the real estate. The portfolio, with a combined occupancy rate of 83%, is expected to be mildly accretive to earnings in 2015. In addition, the next day Ensign bolstered its already strong presence in Southern California with the acquisition of two... Read More »
